A Simple Guide to Beanie Boo Sizes

One of the reasons why Beanie Boos rock and are so collectible is the fact that they are available in such a wide range of characters and sizes! Over the years, the sizes have changed a great deal. New sizes of Beanie Boos made their debut, and the names for these sizes were altered to accommodate new releases. With these changes, it can be hard to keep track of which sizes are available and how big they are.

We’ve put together an easy guide to Beanie Boo sizing through the years to help clarify things.

Where it All Began
In the beginning, there was only one size of Beanie Boo toy on the market. In fact, in June 2009 when the original generation first appeared in the United Kingdom there were only seven characters. All seven of the first-generation Beanie Boos were the regular 6-inch size.  It was a modified version of these characters which launched in the USA later the same year.
Following the success of the initial launch, TY went on to introduce two new Beanie Boo sizes to the range. These were a medium sized option known as Boo Buddies and Boo Boos, which were the Beanie Boo key-clips.

Bigger Beanie Boos Hit The Stores
It was not until January 2012 that TY began to introduce larger Beanie Boos. The first four to appear in stores were Coconut, Cookie, Safari and Waddles. These were all introduced in a 13-inch size. At this stage, the official sizes were as follows:
  • Clip (5 Inch)
  • Regular (6 Inch)
  • Big (13 inches)

However, by Spring of 2012, the TY retailers catalog was updated to reflect another new size option, and the names were adjusted to accommodate this. The official names and sizes from Spring 2012 onwards are:
  • Clip (5 Inch)
  • Regular (6 Inch)
  • Medium (13 Inch)
  • Large (16 Inch)

Limited Run Sizing
Since 2012, the official sizing has remained the same. However, there have been some limited-edition Beanie Boos that have emerged over the years that do not fit into any of these categories. These tend to be retailer specific Beanie Boos or promotional items, only available in limited quantities or for a short time. Some of the most popular variants of this nature include:
  • CVS Cookie – January 2013 saw a 12-inch version of Cookie being sold exclusively by CVS Pharmacy as a Valentine’s Day promotion. It is believed to be the only Beanie Boo that was produced in this size, making it a hit with collectors.
  • Extra Large Beanie Boos – In the early part of 2014, an extra-large version of a handful of Beanie Boos was made available to authorized TY retailers in the United Kingdom. Intended as a display item only, the extra large Beanie Boos were never destined for sale. These promotional toys did not have the iconic heart-shaped swing tag or an official tush tag. However, towards the end of September 2014, six different extra-large Beanie Boos did show up on sale across Europe – featuring the appropriate tags. These had a very limited run of only 600 per character.
  • Teenie Beanie Boos – In July 2014, McDonald's was celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Happy Meal. As part of the celebration, the fast food giants teamed up with TY to put one of 16 different Teenie Beanie Boos in each Happy Meal sold. There were eight different teenie characters based off existing Beanie Boos, and each was available with two different color variations. This collaboration with McDonald's is happening again in May 2017 with 15 new Teenie Beanie Boos appearing in Happy Meals.

Looking to the Future
The sizes of Beanie Boos have not changed much in recent years, but that could be about to change. In April of this year, a new line debuted at the NY Toy Fair. This new line is to be known as Mini Boos, and they are just 2 inches tall. The fundamental difference, aside from their small size, is that they are more plastic in nature – like Shopkins – and they will be available in a blind bag format.

How to Care for Your Beanie Boos

Beanie Boos are cute, adorable and so fluffy you just might die! However, if you do not take care of your Beanie Boo pals properly, then they can soon end up looking a little bit sad and dirty. Nobody wants that – how can Beanie Boos rock if they are not looking like the superstars that they are?

Let’s check out some simple tips to help care for your Beanie Boos and keep them looking fabulous!

Daily Care for Beanie Boos
The best way to keep your Beanie Boos looking fantastic is to take good care of them on a daily basis. Make sure that you put them somewhere safe when you are not playing with them so that they do not get dirty or damaged. Some Beanie Boo owners have a special shelf or a cabinet that is just for their fluffy buddies.

One thing that you should be doing for your Beanie Boos on a regular basis is combing their hair if they have long hair or fur. You do not need to do this every day, but if you take the time to do it about once a week, you will keep them in tip top condition. You should do this by gently combing the hair or fur using a soft brush or fine comb. The hair care kits that you can buy for a new-born are ideal for this purpose!

Cleaning Your Beanie Boos
If you are thinking of helping your furry friend to star in their very own Beanie Boo rocks music video, then you are going to want them looking their very best! The first step in cleaning your baby is to use the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner to gently go over the surface area to remove any dust and loose dirt that is on their fur.

If your Beanie Boo is looking a little bit dirty, then you should give them a ‘bath.' However, that does not mean dunking them in an actual tub of water! What you need to do is get a clean, damp cloth and surface clean the dirty areas of your Beanie Boos fur. You do not want to get it too wet, just enough to lift the marks from the fur. You can use a little mild detergent, like baby shampoo, for particularly stubborn marks. Be gentle with your friend; you should not use a scrubbing motion. One the dirt is all gone; you should leave the toy to air dry completely.

If your Beanie Boo is too dirty only to spot clean, for example, if it fell in a muddy puddle or had soda spilled on it, then you might need to put it into the washer. Machine washing is always the last resort, and you should try to surface clean it first if possible since they are not designed to be machine washed. If you do decide to go for it, then you will first need to carefully remove the heart tag as this will get ruined in the wash if you don’t. You should then place it inside a pillowcase and tie a knot in it. The pillow case will stop your Beanie Boo rattling around too much in the machine. You should put the washer on a delicate setting and then air dry. Once again, this method of washing should be considered a last resort as it will weaken the fabric if done too often.

Beanie Boos Need Baths Too!

Beanie Boos Music Video
Is it time for your Beanie Boos to get a bath?

If you're anything like us, then you probably love to take your Beanie Boos with you wherever you go. While it might brighten up our days, it has the opposite effect on our Beanie Boos. As they go everywhere we go, they end up collecting a lot of dirt and stains. You may even notice that your Beanie Boos have picked up an unusual smell, and it's probably not one that you appreciate.

So, you're left with only a two options, put your Beanie Boos in a bag and never let them get dirty, or find a way to clean them safely.

While throwing them in the washing machine may seem like a good option, it is possible that doing so could spell the end for your friend. This is especially a threat if it is a stuffed animal that you have had for some time. So how do you clean your Beanie Boos safely?

Hand Wash
While the washing machine may be a good option for some stuffed animals, it poses a threat to many others. If your stuffed animal has a music box inside, is very fragile or old, or has anything other than stuffing inside (like Beanie Boos!) then the washing machine could be dangerous. In these cases, you are much better off by opting for a good old fashion hand washing.

Washing Machine
If you're washing a stuffed animal that is not fragile, old, or stuffed with other materials, then the washing machine may work fine. If your washing machine is a top-loader, then the agitator in the middle might be too harsh on your stuffed friend. The best practice is to put your stuffed animal in a mesh laundry bag, choose a gentle cycle, and always use a mild detergent. Lastly, let them air dry instead of putting them in the dryer.

Steam-Clean in the Dryer
If you've washed your stuffed animals, then they need to avoid the dryer. However, if your dryer has a steam sanitize or steam clean option, then it may be even better than using a washing machine in the first place. While this could get noisy for a bit, this is a great alternative to hand or machine washing. Make sure you follow the instructions for your machine and always use milder cleaning agents.

Spot-Cleaning
If your stuffed animal isn't too dirty but has picked up a couple of stains, then spot-cleaning may be your best option. This is far less aggressive than the other methods we have mentioned since you are only cleaning the visibly dirty areas. Make sure that you do not use bleach-based or harsh cleaners, as they may remove more than just the stains.

Always Be Cautious
Many of us can think back and remember our favorite childhood stuffed friends. Often, the years of love have left them somewhat worn, that could mean broken stitching or even a missing arm or leg. Before you choose any of these cleaning options, you will want to ensure that you have stitched up any holes and reattached any torn or lost limbs. Once you have chosen the best cleaning method, you will be more than satisfied with how clean and fresh your stuffed animals are. Keeping them clean means that we can keep them closer longer, and that is the best feeling there is.

For the love of Beanie Boos,

Hug them, collect them or dance to their music. These fluffy babies are sure to make your day!

1. Toys to Teach About Feelings
Children often find it difficult to label and understand feelings. While this is normal, the faster that they can begin to understand emotions, the better off they will be. Memory games that showcase the difference between angry and irritated, or sad and lonely, can go a long way to helping your child express themselves.

2. Artistic Toys
Painting, drawing, and making music have been shown to be an effective mood enhancer. These toys are widely available and typically low-cost as well. Coloring and drawing materials, as well as moldable puddies, are great ways to give your kids an expressive edge.

3. Relaxing Toys
Toys that are rich in color and lights will cause a rise in endorphins, making them a mood enhancer. Thankfully, many Beanie Boos are covered in bright and beautiful colors. Their demeanors are pleasant and calming as well. Whether it's to help calm an agitated mood, or to bring up a depressed mood, Beanie Boos make a great comfort toy.

4. Pretend Play
Pretend play is a great way to get the imagination going. A healthy imagination is important for your child later in life, as it will help them in problem-solving and other areas. This is another are where Beanie Boos make a great choice. Whether it's just one or several, your child will be eager to create their own Beanie Boo tales.

5. Silly is Better than Serious
While it is good to provide your children with educational toys, don't limit them on toys aimed at fun. Laughter is a medicine we all need from time to time, and your children especially need it. Fun is an important part of a child's development, and while our kids may not deal with adult struggles, they are continually learning from and experiencing a whole new world. This can be very stressful and the right toy to bring them back to laughter is needed from time to time, and the right Beanie Boo can do just the trick.

Play On
Ensuring that your kids get toys that are safe and beneficial is an important role that parents must fill. Hopefully, these 5 areas will help you in deciding the next toys to get for your children. Thankfully, Beanie Boos are here to help make that choice even easier!
